Natural stone is one of the most durable and sustainable construction materials available. When managed correctly, it can be dismantled, reused and repurposed, significantly reducing embodied carbon and material waste.
At Putney & Wood, we actively support sustainable stone construction through the careful dismantling, reuse and recycling of existing façades and stone elements, working closely with clients and design teams to retain material value wherever possible.
We have recent, practical experience delivering stone reuse strategies on live projects, including:

The existing ground-level stone shopfront is currently being carefully dismantled, with retained stone intended to be reused and repurposed as part of the new window surrounds. The process includes controlled dismantling, assessment of stone condition and early coordination with the design team to support practical reuse within the new façade.

As part of a heritage-led redevelopment, the existing stone façade is being carefully dismantled, retained and prepared for reinstatement within the new building. This process supports the preservation of historic fabric while contributing to reduced embodied carbon through the reuse of existing materials. Careful dismantling, storage and coordination with the wider project team are central to the successful reintegration of the retained stonework.
The original stone façade was dismantled and the recovered stone reprocessed and cut down for reuse as internal stone flooring within the new building. This allowed the retained material to be given a new function while maintaining architectural continuity and reducing waste.
These projects required detailed planning, accurate surveying, careful dismantling and close coordination between design, commercial and construction teams — all areas where early specialist input is critical.

Our involvement typically includes:
Pre-deconstruction surveys and reuse feasibility assessments
Careful dismantling, numbering and storage of existing stone
Assessment of stone condition, dimensions and reuse potential
Reprocessing, resizing and repurposing of retained material
Integration of reused stone into new façade or internal designs
By engaging early, we help clients make informed decisions about what can be retained, reused or recycled, balancing sustainability objectives with programme, cost and performance requirements.
Stone reuse and repurposing can deliver tangible benefits, including:
Reduced embodied carbon
Reduced material waste and landfill
Preservation of high-quality natural materials
Alignment with client ESG and sustainability strategies
We work collaboratively with project teams to ensure reuse strategies are practical, compliant and deliverable on site.
