Following appointment, our stone design team works closely with the project team to interpret and develop the architect’s drawings into coordinated construction information.
As specialist stone contractors, we provide technical input on detailing, buildability and value engineering, helping ensure the stone package is practical and efficient. The process is collaborative, with regular coordination between the architect, consultants and contractor.
We also produce detailed setting-out drawings and cutting schedules for every stone element, and where required templates. These are used by the stone supplier during the manufacturing process to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Early contractor involvement through PCSAs and pre-construction support
- Technical design development for stone façades and architectural stonework
- Buildability reviews, risk assessment and construction sequencing
- Value engineering and material optimisation to improve cost certainty
Solutions
Sean began his career with Putney & Wood in 2006. Fresh from college, where he achieved a BTEC National Diploma in Construction, he has progressed up the ranks to his current position of Design Manager. Sean learnt the intricacies of stone design from experienced masons and has worked on innumerable projects over the years. Highlights include The Old Bailey, Bodleian Library in Oxford and the Baitul Futah Mosque in Surrey.
Having completed City & Guilds qualifications in AutoCAD 2d and 3d, and acquired the critical hands-on skills required to run a busy and successful design office, Sean has become an important member of Putney & Wood’s senior team.

Pre-Construction Services (PCSA)
We regularly support projects under Pre-Construction Services Agreements, providing specialist input during the design phase. This allows us to review façade details, programme requirements and cost implications before construction begins.

Design Development
Working with architects and consultants, we help develop practical and buildable stone façade solutions. Our input focuses on technical detailing, fixing strategies and coordination with structural and envelope systems.

Buildability & Risk Reduction
Early specialist input allows potential construction risks to be identified and addressed during design. This includes reviewing installation methodology, structural interfaces and sequencing to ensure the façade package is practical to deliver on site.

Value Engineering
Through collaboration with the design team and supply chain, we explore alternative materials, detailing and construction methods that maintain the architectural intent while improving cost efficiency and programme certainty.

Coordination with Project Teams
We work closely with architects, engineers and main contractors to ensure stone packages integrate effectively with the wider building envelope and structural systems.

Client Assurance & Technical Support
Our early involvement gives clients confidence that the proposed façade solution is deliverable, coordinated and aligned with programme and budget expectations before construction begins.
