LIVE Project – Salisbury Square Development (SSD), Fleet Street, London

Salisbury Square Development (SSD), Fleet Street, London

The Salisbury Square Development is a major redevelopment located on Fleet Street in the City of London, within a historically sensitive and highly prominent urban setting. The project combines contemporary architectural design with robust, high-quality materials selected to reflect the character and stature of the surrounding legal and media quarter.

Putney & Wood were engaged to deliver specialist natural stone works to the development, incorporating a combination of Portuguese limestone and black granite. The stone elements form a key part of the building’s external architectural expression and required a high level of technical expertise, precision, and craftsmanship.

A significant aspect of the works involved the design coordination and installation of large-format stone elements, including black granite bullnose cills weighing close to 3 tonnes and substantial limestone heads weighing approximately 2.5 tonnes each. These elements demanded carefully engineered fixing solutions, precise setting-out, and controlled installation methods to safely manage the weight and complexity of the stone while achieving the required architectural finish.

The interface between contrasting materials and the scale of the individual stone units required strict quality control, accurate alignment, and close collaboration with the wider project team. Particular attention was given to tolerances, load paths, and sequencing to ensure the stonework was installed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the design intent.

Delivered within the constraints of a dense City of London site, the works demonstrate Putney & Wood’s capability in executing technically demanding stone packages involving heavyweight elements and complex fixings. The completed stonework provides a durable, refined façade befitting the prominence of the Fleet Street location.
