London’s Lucky Charm is Back!

London’s Lucky Charm is Back!

According to legend, it was brought to London by Brutus, one of the first Romans, and it may have formed part of a high-status Roman building. Shakespeare mentioned it in Henry VI Part 2, and it has survived both The Great Fire of London and the Blitz. The saying “So long as the stone of Brutus is safe, so long shall London flourish” has led to the myth that the very survival of London is somehow linked to the safety of this 76kg piece of ancient limestone. But is it really just a myth? When it was returned to its rightful place in 1962 the Cuban Missile Crisis was resolved soon after. If it really does command such power, no doubt Mrs. May will be delighted that on 4th October, it was restored and returned in a lavish ceremony that included the Lord Mayor of London. Perhaps just knowing it’s once again in its rightful place will help her tackle the on-going Brexit negotiations. Putney & Wood were trusted with the design and construction of an impressive new Portland Stone enclosure which is built into the façade adjacent to the main entrance at 111 Cannon Street. Putney & Wood also designed and installed the Amarelo Macieira granite plinth and the Portland stone cladding for the entire development.
