16 Blossom Court

16 Blossom Street is an office-led mixed-use development forming part of the Norton Folgate masterplan for British Land, located within the Elder Street Conservation Area in the City of London. The scheme revitalises a collection of previously vacant plots alongside a number of retained listed buildings to create a distinctive new workplace and retail destination.

At the heart of the development is Blossom Court, an enclosed courtyard surrounded by a varied architectural composition. Putney & Wood were appointed to design and install Pyrolave cladding to one of the courtyard’s key feature elevations. Pyrolave is a glazed architectural product similar to traditional faience, but manufactured using cut-to-size lava stone as a substrate for the glaze rather than bespoke fired clay units.

As part of the works, Putney & Wood developed a bespoke carrier system within the cavity to support and restrain the hand-set cladding. This system comprised continuous rails fixed back to an SFS backing structure. High-level dormers were also clad in Pyrolave, incorporating complex load-bearing angles to the dormer cheeks and heads.
