External stone cladding
Located in Berners Street, in the Fitzrovia district of the West End, The Copyright Building replaces three existing buildings with a new, 105,000 sq ft commercial development over seven floors.
With travertine, bronze and timber all specified for the façade, Putney & Wood’s design team established close dialogue with the installers of the other façade materials to ensure the interfaces were correctly detailed. The travertine block was selected in Rome and during a subsequent factory, the entire façade was dry-laid for inspection. The stone detailing was meticulous, with book-matched veining and glued and pinned mitres to create the appearance of solid panels.
Putney & Wood also designed and supplied secondary steel which was used extensively to accommodate the stone cladding. Along with SFS and cast in-situ concrete, the secondary steel was one of three substrate materials the stone cladding was fixed to.
The scheme achieved the BREEAM Excellent environmental standard and was sold by Derwant after the construction work for £165m.
