External stone cladding
Located in the Old Street district the City of London, this Art Deco inspired 27-storey, development incorporates 206 private apartments along with offices, restaurants and artist’s studios/workshops. Standing 81m high, Eagle House is the second tallest stone building in the UK, trumped only by the 106m Shell Tower which was, for a time, Britain’s tallest building.
Mount Anvil, appointed Putney & Wood to design and install 4,500m2 of the Moleanos limestone cladding across the 6-storey podium, and more unusually, the entire 27-storey tower. Due the high cost associated with scaffolding an 81 metre tower, seven mastclimbers were used to access the upper 13 floors, while a traditional 5-board scaffold was used for the podium and lower 14 floors.
Typically, a pair of masons can install approximately five square metres of cladding per day using the scaffold. However, the mastclimbers increased productivity by 50%, allowing a pair to install 7.5m2 per pair, per day. With a team of 20 masons on site, we were able to deliver the cladding package within the tight programme while maintaining the premium quality required for such a high profile project.
